Every year people open a safe they have not touched since spring and find orange freckling along a blued barrel, a pitted bolt face, or a rust bloom under the grip panels of a revolver that was perfect when it went in. None of that happens overnight, and all of it is preventable.

Here is how corrosion actually starts, what humidity level you are aiming for, and the maintenance routine that keeps steel clean through a full season of storage.

What Actually Causes Rust on Stored Firearms

Rust is oxidation. Iron plus oxygen plus moisture equals iron oxide, and the reaction never sleeps. On a stored firearm, the moisture arrives from four places, and most gun owners only think about one of them.

1. Ambient humidity

Air holds water. A safe in a basement, a garage, or anywhere in the Gulf South is sitting inside humid air, and the safe does nothing to change that. It just contains it.

2. Temperature swings and condensation

This is the one people miss. When the temperature around a safe drops, the steel inside cools slower than the air, and water condenses directly onto your firearms. 4. Trapped residue

Powder fouling is hygroscopic, meaning it pulls moisture out of the air and holds it against the metal.
