Your Glock will run dirty. That is the whole legend. But "will run dirty" and "should run dirty" are two very different things, and the gap between them is where malfunctions, rust pits, and worn-out recoil springs live.

This is the no-nonsense version of how to clean a Glock. Field strip, degrease, lubricate the four points that actually matter, function check, done. Fifteen minutes at the bench with the right products, and your pistol goes back in the safe or the holster ready to work.

Before You Touch Anything: Clear the Weapon

Every Glock field strip requires you to pull the trigger. That single fact is responsible for a depressing number of negligent discharges every year. Do this every single time, in this order:

  1. Remove the magazine. Set it on the other side of the bench.
  2. Lock the slide to the rear.
  3. Look into the chamber. Then put a finger in it. Eyes lie, fingers do not.
  4. Remove all ammunition from the room. Not the bench. The room.
  5. Point the muzzle at something that can absorb a round, release the slide, and press the trigger.

What You Actually Need to Clean a Glock

Step 1: Field Strip the Glock

Glock designed this to be done in seconds without tools, and that design has not changed meaningfully across generations.

  1. With the weapon clear and the trigger pressed, grip the slide and pull it back roughly a quarter inch. Any further and the trigger resets, and you start over.
  2. Hold that position and pull down on both slide lock tabs at the same time.
  3. Ease the slide forward and off the frame.
  4. Lift out the recoil spring assembly. It is captured, so do not try to take it apart.
  5. Push the barrel forward, lift the lug, and pull it free.

Four parts: slide, barrel, recoil spring assembly, frame. That is a full field strip. You do not need to detail strip a Glock for routine cleaning, and pulling the striker channel apart every week does more harm than good.

Step 2: Knock Down the Carbon

Carbon fouling is the thing that actually degrades function. It builds on the breech face, under the extractor, on the barrel hood, and in the slide's interior rails.

Hit those areas with carbon cleaner and let the solvent do the work for a minute or two before you scrub. Most people scrub immediately and then wonder why they are still scrubbing ten minutes later. Dwell time is free labor.

Then work through it:

  • Breech face: swab the recessed area around the firing pin hole. This is where a ring of carbon builds and eventually affects reliable ignition.
  • Extractor and extractor claw: a pointed swab under the claw removes the buildup that causes failures to extract.
  • Slide interior rails: the four small cuts inside the slide that ride the frame rails. Carbon and old grease collect here.
  • Barrel hood and locking lugs: the shiny wear surfaces on top of the barrel. Clean, then leave a very light film.

Step 3: Clean the Barrel and Bore

Run a solvent-wet patch through the bore from chamber to muzzle. Follow with a bore brush, five to ten passes. Follow with dry patches until they come out clean.

Then scrub the chamber and the feed ramp. A dirty feed ramp is one of the most common causes of failures to feed in a carry gun, and it takes eight seconds to fix.

Finish the outside of the barrel, especially the locking lug area and the underside of the hood. Those surfaces carry every bit of the pressure during unlock.

Step 4: Wipe Down the Frame

Do not soak a Glock frame. Do not spray solvent into the trigger housing and hope. You are wiping, not flooding.

Wipe the four frame rails, the locking block, and the connector area with a lightly dampened patch. Use a swab to pull dust and lint out of the magazine well and the trigger bar channel. Then leave it alone. The polymer frame does not need a bath, and the striker channel should stay dry. Step 5: Lubricate the Four Points That Matter

This is where most people go wrong in both directions. Some run it bone dry. Some drown it. A Glock wants a startlingly small amount of lubricant in a few specific places.

Using the 1 oz CLP Needle Bottle, apply:

  1. One drop on each of the four frame rails. That is four drops total, spread thin. If it is pooling, you used too much.
  2. A light film on the barrel hood and the outside of the barrel where it contacts the inside of the slide.
  3. One drop where the trigger bar contacts the connector. This is the small ramped surface at the rear of the frame. It smooths the trigger noticeably.
  4. A thin film on the inside of the slide where the barrel rides.

That is it. Roughly five to six drops for the entire pistol. Then take a patch with CLP on it and wipe every exterior surface. That wipe-down is your corrosion barrier, and on a carry gun that spends its life against sweat, it matters more than the lubrication does. Step 6: Reassemble and Function Check

Reverse the strip: barrel into slide, recoil spring assembly seated against the barrel lug, slide onto the frame, rack it once to reset.

Then function check, every time:

  • Rack the slide. Press the trigger. You should feel a break.
  • Hold the trigger to the rear, rack the slide, release the trigger slowly. You should feel and hear the reset.
  • Press again. It should break.
  • Insert an empty magazine and confirm the slide locks back.

A cleaning that ends without a function check is not finished. It is just optimistic.

How Often Should You Clean a Glock?

Honest answer, based on how the pistol is used:

  • Carry gun: wipe down and re-oil weekly whether you shot it or not. Sweat and lint are the enemy, not powder. Full clean monthly.
  • Range gun: clean after every range session, or at minimum every 500 rounds.
  • Duty or competition: after every use, without exception.

Also replace the recoil spring assembly every 3,000 to 5,000 rounds on a compact, and every 5,000 on a full size. It is a cheap part that quietly controls your slide velocity and your brass ejection pattern.

Four Mistakes That Wreck Glocks

  1. Over-lubricating. Excess oil migrates into the striker channel, collects carbon, and turns into paste. Light primer strikes follow.
  2. Oiling the striker channel on purpose. It is designed to be dry. Leave it dry.
  3. Using harsh solvents near polymer and optics. Aggressive chemicals can haze a red dot lens and attack the frame finish. Non-toxic formulas exist for exactly this reason.
  4. Skipping the exterior wipe-down on a carry gun. Body sweat is salt water. Salt water and carbon steel slides do not negotiate.
